It’s time to Rock Your Firefox!

Tuesday, Mar 9, 2010

Welcome to Rock Your Firefox, a place for Firefox users to discover cool new add-ons, or just learn what add-ons are all about.

So what are Firefox Add-ons? You can think of them as apps that let you customize your Firefox browser. As a global community, Mozilla pioneered the personalized Web browser with Firefox Add-ons. For the first time, users could pick and choose ways to customize their unique online experience. And today hundreds of millions of people worldwide have downloaded nearly 2 billion add-ons.

We’re launching Rock Your Firefox to feature reviews, feedback, and insights from people around the Web who are using Firefox Add-ons to make their online experience better. There are thousands of ways to customize your browser with Firefox Add-ons in categories like social, communication, travel and photos, music and video. An add-on can be a new time-saving sidebar, a shortcut to search, or a themed look. So for anything you spend time doing on the Web, whether it’s listening to your favorite songs, shopping on Amazon.com, or checking the weather in the mountains, there’s probably an add-on that makes those activities easier and more enjoyable.

Add-ons are awesome, but many people don’t know how to take full advantage of them. We want to change that, because using Firefox without exploring add-ons is a little like visiting Rome but never leaving your five-star hotel. The service may be impeccable, but you’ll miss out big time if you don’t get out and see the sights.

So check back often. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we’ll highlight relevant and helpful Firefox Add-ons. Subscribe to our feed and follow us on Twitter to keep in touch.

Let’s get started!  Check our our first featured add-on, Yoono!

I tried Firefox.4.0 Beta, perhaps 1, also; but Google Toolbar did not work with it, so I switched back to 3. I’d love to know when, if ever, a Google Toolbar would work it 4.0, so I can try it again!

      Welcome to Firefox, Cody!
It sounds like you’re talking about Personas.
For context, you can read a Rock Your Firefox post about Earth Day Personas here:

Oh, man. I’m really loving this site as opposed to the original add-ons site. =)

And just for the record, I tried Google Chrome for about two days. It was nice and all, but I guess I will just be a Firefox junkie forever!

I may have to stay with Chrome, instead of Firefox 3.0 — and perhaps 4 — because on my 27″ iMac — but one on my much older 15″ PowerBook G4 — clicking of hyperlink to send email in Firefox — (and unfortunately in Chrome which uses Firefox email) — my iMac goes into a ‘create a new email infinite loop, sometimes creating over a 1000 tabs! Needless to say Firefox hangs the whole computer. Fortunate other running apps are not affected.

Does anyone know if this is an improperly formatted email that can be corrected; and if so how?

While Mozilla did not “Pioneer” as this article suggests, Mozilla did make it popular. Give some attributon: Browser Helper Objects for browsers as old as Internet Explorer 4 existed. In fact it was the first browser with BHOs. Too bad most times people install a bad one that completely decimates their computer and requires tech support to fix.

I think what the aerticle should try to explain is, Firefox is (probably, possibly, please help me) the first HTML-structured browser (the interface is a webpage!) which explains why it is so extensible.

I am possibly wrong (except for the IE4 part, I am right on that), and I am not knocking the article at all as blasphemy. I am knocking it for misinformation from misguided individuals who aren’t as “In it” with the browser wars.

      Hi Phoebe,

Thanks for using Firefox! The browser usually updates automatically, although you should be able to update manually. Is there something specific you’re hoping to resolve with an update?

Either way, your best bet is to visit our support site:

      http://support.mozilla.com

You can do a search or post your question in a forum. If you need to talk through the issue a bit, you can start a live chat session.

      Good luck!

      Hi Scott,

The Firefox browser and all Firefox Add-ons are free.

When you visit https://addons.mozilla.org you may see a “suggested donation” for certain add-ons. As part of Mozilla’s commitment to supporting a vibrant and healthy developer ecosystem, these optional contributions help sustain further development of add-ons.

The suggested donation prompt is passive and you can easily install any and all add-ons without ever contributing or feeling pressured to do so.

      Enjoy!

I was looking on your website where I can nominate my browser add- on for a featured download. its one of the most comprehensive and usefull add ons, yet I see add ons that have a fraction of use with tens and thousands of downloads..here is the link

          Hi Johan,

Thanks for letting us know about your add-on. Rock Your Firefox generally features add-ons for the new, non-tech Firefox user. Add-ons designed for developers aren’t as relevant to our audience. But you never know what the future holds!

          Thanks for reading,

Firefox is the best universal browser with all these addons and fast at the same time! Google Chrome and Internet Explorer are proprietary software of their owners and have less addons and are more unsecure!
