Firefox Sync (and Firefox Home for your iPhone)

Tuesday, Jul 27, 2010

You love Firefox. You love it so much, in fact, that you have it installed on every machine you use to surf the web. It’s the first thing you open at the office and the last thing you look at before you head home. Your browser is like your favorite pair of jeans – it’s familiar, comfortable and the perfect fit – with your web history, passwords, and bookmarks.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could have that “favorite jeans” feeling on every device you use whether that’s on a computer or mobile device? With Firefox Sync you can access your history, passwords, bookmarks and even open tabs across all your devices. Imagine reading a nice long article on the migratory patterns of manatees, right when the (imaginary) bell rings at 6 and you have to head out to start your commute home.

In the pre-Sync world, you’d have to remember the web address of that page and type it in on your home computer. With Firefox Sync, the manatee article is ready to go on your home computer – no memorization required. You don’t even have to leave your work computer on- your information is synced automatically. It just works- open your web browser at home and click “Tabs from other computers”, and there’s that manatee article for your reading enjoyment. It’s as if you brought your work computer home with you.

Get the tabs that were open on your other computer (in addition to bookmarks, passwords and web history):

To have this ability to get up and go without a second thought, install the free Firefox Sync Add-On and it will get you set up easily. Install it on every computer where you use Firefox, and your bookmarks, tabs and web history will automatically sync. So if you visited a cool web page at work that you want to show to your family, simply start typing in your Awesome Bar and it will show matches based on all synced computers. It even works as an easy backup for your browser- simply install Firefox Sync on any computer with Firefox installed, and it will update your browser with all your personal preferences if your computer crashes.

Firefox Sync works wherever you have Firefox, whether that’s a desktop, laptop, or mobile phone. If you happen to use an iPhone, you can access all your Firefox Sync history, bookmarks and tabs with the free Firefox Home app.

Firefox Home for your iPhone uses Firefox Sync so you can access your bookmarks, tabs and search history from anywhere:

If you love Firefox and you use the web from more than one device, give Firefox Sync a shot — let Firefox help you get to your favorite parts of the Web in an instant.

Post from Mayumi Matsuno, who has too many nicknames and usernames (not to mention their passwords) to remember and thinks manatees are unbelievably adorable.

This should be very cool, i’ve been looking for something better than Xmarks for a while (it’s a great app though, i’ve used it since it launched as Foxmarks!!)…

What i’m desperate for is something that will sync my addons, themes and settings as well.. I have a very minimal browser, with lots of hidden content, and i’d like that experience everywhere… is that gona be on the cards for this tool down the line?

If you have Firefox installed, simply click the “Get It Now” button on the right side of the post.
