Thanks for an exciting Firefox Cup!

Thursday, Jul 15, 2010

To celebrate the world’s largest football tournament, we launched the Firefox Cup –a friendly, global competition based on the number of users for each team Persona. We’ve seen thousands of fans from around the world showing their team spirit by wearing Personas on their Firefox. The winner for each round was chosen based on the team Persona with the most fans (average daily users) for the week.

Today, we announce the overall winner of the competition:  Germany! Congratulations to Brazil and Spain, who were second and third place, respectively.

Here’s a recap of the four rounds:

• June 16th: Brazil won round 1 with Argentina in close competition.

• June 23rd: Brazil kept their lead.

• June 30th: Brazil hung on to its lead in round 3 with 17,380 supporters, just a few more hundred than Germany.

• July 7th: Germany jumped to first place!

Thanks to all the loyal fans and community members for supporting their teams in the Firefox Cup! We’re already looking forward to the next football tournament and challenge Paul the Octopus to follow the Firefox Cup!

explain how soccer can be referred to as “FOOTBALL”
when”" football is a recognized sport with a non-round
ball, completely different rules, field dimensions and techniques’
    for scoring.
These few references, only identify the most basic issues as to why;SOCCER should not and, can not be referred to as, FOOTBALL, in referring to the game of “soccer”,while
soccer is a most formidable sport, it is not football.

I would invite a reply as to why soccer and not football should be called by alternative names, I will look for the worlds position on this issue.
thank you for expressing the opinions of all those
    fans out there.

Dude, Soccer is called “football” in other nations, but were the only nation to call it soccer. In Latin it is actually spelled “futbol”. Other nations (i think) spell it football like American football. Just look it up and u might be amazed…

Football is so named because it is played with the feet. Hence the name of the sport.
American football is mainly played using the hands. It’s just one of those twisted names for the sport.

To Athompson. I totally agree with you! The other comment is correct in the fact that it is “Futbil” in other countries, however, we are not in other countries. Soccer blows anyway! Just my opinion folks, don’t hate because some of us don’t care for it as a sport! With that said, it can be confusing. I call it soccer! And call Football, Football!

Sorry, but since you are obviously in the minority, and I believe this firefox website is designed for a worldwide audience, the world game is referred to as “football” to make sure most of the world understands what sport it is.

I would be really interested in an astronomy type updater. When meteor showers can be seen, certain galaxies, certain stars, what’s going on in the solar system etc. Backgrounds with pictures of the ‘space’ . That would be great and I think alot of other people would like it too. Thanks for listening.
