I learned early on not to poke fun of schizophrenia in my writing. Wise mentors taught me that split-personality jokes are cheap and generally don’t sell more ice cream (with or without bananas).
I also learned that schizophrenics do not necessarily have split-personality disorder. They’re also not “goof balls”; but we all agreed that was closest to what I intended in my writing.
No matter how the pathology is named, mocking people struggling with mental illness is a no-go.
