Web of Trust

Find out whether the sites you’re visiting are safe with Web of Trust’s simple-to-use traffic light rating system.

Browsing unknown websites can often make you feel outside your comfort zone. With the horror stories classically associated with the web — the threat of malware (like viruses and spy-ware), or the risks of letting a minor use the Internet unsupervised — this is not surprising.

Web of Trust uses a simple, three color, traffic light system to let you know if you should exercise caution when you land on a website for the first time.

Web of Trust - Poor ReputationUsing scores generated by Web of Trust’s global community, websites are rated on four criteria: trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy and child safety. The aggregated scores appear next to your Awesome Bar as either a red, amber or green ‘O.’ The symbol also appears next to your search listings to warn you of any dangers before you click.

Web of Trust - WarningIf a site you end up on is rated red — i.e. dangerous — Web of Trust pops up a handy warning, letting you know that the site has a poor reputation and prompts you to confirm that you are aware of the dangers. You can then choose to find out more about the rating details, rate the site yourself or ignore the warning altogether.

You can download the Web of Trust add-on for Firefox for free. Find out more about Web of Trust and check the reputation of a website on Web of Trust’s homepage.

Web of Trust is a joke. Anonymous wannabe censors rate your site and the website owner is offered no way to challenge their rating.

To show how easily WOT’s ratings can be manipulated take a look at climatechangedispatch.com or for that matter any site that challenges the global warming theory. You’ll find that WOT ranks them at the ‘bottom of the barrel’ in every category. Then look at any site that supports the global warming theory and you’ll find them very highly rated.

      So, WOT is biased.
      Is that reasonable to say?

I didn’t like it. Suddenly, every link, every gmail banner ad, every embedded e-mail in the numerous e-mail digests I receive daily, all had annoying colored circles next to them. It was a sea of visual noise that drowned out what I was actually trying to see on the web page. I disabled it a few times, but it kept restarting itself. I just removed it through the Firefox add-ons and extensions menu; we’ll see if that one takes.
